COVID Airline Updates
Airline Updates for Cozumel Mexico
Just like so many other things these days, the information from the airlines seems to change daily. This is making it a little tougher to get here, but with some proper planning its still very doable. I’ve already talked to several people who have booked their trips for this fall.
Just to review:
AMERICAN AIRLINES – is offering flights from both DFW and Charlotte DFW – was flying daily but no longer flies directly into Cozumel on Tue and Wed. They do provide service the other 5 days of the week. This flight departs from DFW at 12:30 PM, and arrives to Cozumel at 3:10, then departs here at 4:05 and arrives back to DFW at 7 pm. Charlotte – service every Sat, through Aug 15. It will be suspended until Oct 10, when it begins every Sat again.
DELTA – no longer operates in Cozumel, but they do fly into Cancun
SUN COUNTRY – suspends their twice weekly service on Aug 9.
UNITED – began service today, and flies in from Houston ONLY on Sat through the end of Sep. For Oct, Nov and 1/2 of Dec, they are scheduled to fly Wed and Sat. On Thu, Dec 17 daily service begins again.
AIR CANADA – – flights suspended until ???
WEST JET – flights suspended until ???
FRONTIER – has no dates scheduled when they will resume service.
Another option would be to fly to Cancun via American, United, Delta (beginning Jun 26, possibly earlier), Southwest (beginning Jul 3 ?? ). And then come on over here. There are great private taxis services and even limos that you can hire to drive you to Playa del Carmen. Then you would have to cross over on the ferry.
REMINDER – If you have tickets on an airline that is no longer flying here, you have the right to a refund. I know, they want you to keep it on credit. And if you fly them often, great, but they are required to return your money.
Just remember, for the most reliable information, check with the airline directly and check often. They seem to change information frequently and hopefully they will begin adding more flights and returning service soon.
No Travel Restrictions to or from Mexico
There are no travel restrictions to or from Mexico that would prevent you from flying to Cozumel. Every once in a while I hear people say that the U.S. Mexico Border is closed, this is not true.
If you go to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico website (https://mx.usembassy.gov/travel-restrictions-fact-sheet/) Please make sure you read the information carefully and correctly. Yes, the very first bullet does say:
- The United States will temporarily limit inbound land border crossings from Canada and Mexico to “essential travel”.
Notice it says “land border crossings”. This means walking or driving over the physical border between Mexico and the United states, along California, Arizona, New Mexico and Txas. Also if you scroll down the page to the Q&A section, you will find the very first item is:
Q: What will this mean for airline travel and other travel across the border?
A: This action does not apply to air, rail, or sea travel at this time, but does apply to commuter rail and ferry travel.
There is also not a CDC restriction against traveling back to the U.S. from Mexico. If you check the list of countries on the CDC website, you will see a long list of countries that… if you have been to them in the last 14 days, you are unable to enter back into the US. And guess what – Mexico IS NOT ON THAT LIST !!!!!! Click on the button below to go to the CDC site.
As you work to plan your return to Cozumel, don’t buy into the hype and the misinformation. If someone tells you something about your travel plans that doesn’t seem right, look it up yourself, and use official sources. Even if you see something from your local news station or newspaper, that appears to be quoting an official source. If it doesn’t seem right, or you want a second opinion, check it out for yourself. A recent statement by the acting Secretary for U.S. Department of Homeland Security was misquoted in some news sources. I went and found the actual statement HERE . You’ll see he references LAND border crossing.
So remember, go to the airlines site directly, official government websites, and credible health information sites. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Trip Advisor, and other third party booking sites ARE NOT official sources.
