Adaptive Scuba Diving – Cozumel MX
Adaptive Scuba Diving in Cozumel
Scuba Diving is such a magical sport, and we want to make it accessible to as many people as possible. In 2011, we took part in an adaptive scuba diving event in Arizona with Saguaro Divers, and this is where we met one of the LifeWaters Group leaders. There, we discovered a new passion around helping divers with disabilities develop confidence and autonomy underwater.
Little by little we found that our existing clients also had a strong interest in adaptive scuba diving, and from that moment on, at Roberta’s Scuba Shack, we decided to keep the ball rolling and join the LifeWaters group to facilitate diving for people with disabilities. We learned how to accommodate and adapt the sport for paraplegics, quadriplegics, ambulatory, amputees, and people suffering from PTSD as well as acute brain trauma.
In our first year, we took four quadriplegic wheelchair adaptive divers to the water along with 12 additional support divers on one big boat with an adapted platform. And every year since then, the turnout has been more and more important.
We now also offer the Scubility course within our facilities to help professional divers, dive buddies, and people with disabilities, understand and harness adaptive diving.
In 2015, with the support of Home Depot, LifeWaters organized a group to go scuba diving with whale sharks in the Georgia Aquarium, and we participated by buddying up and offering on-site support.
There’s something going on every year, so get in touch if you want to get involved!
